This was not really a fight, as Cooke did not get the penalty (though he probably should have). The reason for the call stems from the hit on Letang in the 1st when Godard went out to try to stir something up, to no avail, and got an unsportsmanlike call for his trouble. While this instance resulted in a crap call (Peckham should probably have been given two five-minutes and Cooke should have had one), the league doesn't want every good hit to be followed up by some blindsided attack on the player. Godard demonstrated what should happen when there is a legal, albeit questionable hit. To quote BGL, "I never fought anyone who didn't want to." I would definitely agree that the "irritators" like Avery, Ruutu, Cooke, etc... need to be accountable for these hits, but Peckham was all over him and throwing punches before Cooke got his gloves off. What's next, are we going to rate the Bertuzzi punch to the back of the head?

Tough to call this one. Do you vote for the filth that is Matt Cooke or the filth that is the Oilers? Why did the refs step in so early? I love that the Oilers got a 7 minute PK out of this - probably cost them the game.

Cooke should have had a fighting major. I agree with the extra time for Peckham, although I thought Cooke should have been penalized for his jersey not being tied-down. A cheesy call I know but one that was made on Cole earlier in the season and really hurt the Oilers. I watched this game on a Pittsburgh feed and was disgusted with the announcing/ call of the game.

Clean hit...yes. Depending on where you fall on fighting in the game, the response was justified. I agree with Peckham's response given who was hit and who did the hitting. If its Crosby on Gagner, Peckham isn't going to grab Crosby. Its Cooke though...and we all know what he likes to do. Peckham did the right thing. Cooke did the right thing by holding on and taking his lumps right up until the refs get in there and Peckham stops throwing and SURPRISE SURPRISE Gutless Cooke suckers him when Peckham stops and the refs tie them up. That is why it is perfectly acceptable to pummel Matt Cooke whenever he takes a run at someone (more often than not a skill player who he knows won't fight him). Bettman - please take out the instigator penalty so we can rid the league of agitators who take runs at good players and then cower when its time to answer for it.

If some of you would of watch the play before the Gagner hit you would of seen the cheap hit by Cooke on I think Tom Gilbert. He left his feet and elbowed Gilbert. So after Cooke running after Gagner 10 seconds after his cheap hit and the refs not calling anything it was the right thing to do for the first game rookie to do. Cooke is a coward and should of at least got 4 minutes.

I always loved the honour factor when someone really got laid out something fierce, but the fact that you can't give a beautiful open ice hit anymore without having to drop the gloves is a little silly.

Clearly Cooke did manage to get his gloves off, too bad he couldn't get a shot off. Should have been a fighting major as well. If you recall, that was Cooke's 2nd hit in less than a minute! He was out there throwing his weight around, hitting guys smaller than him!! Peckham stood up for his team members...which MacIntyre couldn't do...he only saw 30seconds in the whole game after his lousy fight! Peckham is going to make a great addition to the Oilers....just as soon as they wake up and decide to keep him in the majors. Cooke deserved every shot he took!!

Peckham had it won before the refs stepped in, however Cooke got rocked on a late hit that was lauched from Peckhams left hand while two refs trying to seperate! That was like having a scope of ice cream on the warm apple pie... the apple pie is good enough by itself, but became memorable after the scope was tossed on.
